    ostrea (akasaka)
Tonight I will be visiting Ostrea, arguably the best oyster bar in Tokyo. It will be my eighth time or so by now so I decided to post.

Ostrea is only 2 minute walk from the Akasaka-Mitsuke station on the Ginza or Marunouchi Line, alongside the Pachinko parlors on Tamachi-dori(田町通り).

Whenever I go in the evening on a weekday, it is packed. I usually make a reservation at least three days ahead to be safe. I usually start out with the oyster platter and ask for one each of each variety per person. They stock over a dozen varieties all four seasons except on very few occasions which I was there when they run out of stock. A la carte oyster prices vary from 330 yen to 840 yen apiece, depending on the variety and market conditions whereas the 12 piece platter sets you back 4880 yen.

The service is friendly and atmosphere is clean, modern, but cozy and relaxing. The wine list is not the likes of the best restaurants but the selection should not disappoint you. When in doubt, ask your server for the recommendation, seldom that she will let you down.

Although the cooked dishes are of reasonable quality, after a dozen or two of oysters and a few glasses of Champagne and a bottle of a nice Chardonnay, it may or may not matter, but I recommend the Bagna càuda and any of the desserts if you are not full from the oysters.

Sure, it is not somewhere that you would go everyday, but this place would impress your date if he/she is an oyster lover. I never seem to get bored of going back there. They also have locations in Roppongi on Roppongi-dori across from Roppongi Hills and also in Ginza. I prefer the atmosphere in Akasaka, Roppongi, then Ginza in that order not to say that Ginza is horrible, but Ginza location does not feel like an oyster bar. It is a bit claustrophobic.

All said, this is the place for oysters in Tokyo and I beg others to challenge me on this.

    Gutsy Move....
    http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/25/opinion/25desantis.html

My colleague has made a gutsy move as he left the firm. Although I agree with many points that he makes, would I publicly criticise the Attorney General of New York in an open resignation letter? I have not performed long enough service in the firm but could I have done the same? It makes me think. Way to go Jake!

    Long Time No Post
Oh wow, it has been two years (almost) since I last posted... Time flies. I will try to keep a record more of what goes on in my life. Let's see... What happened in the last two years?

    - Still single and still looking!
    - At least a few heartbreaks
    - Change of day job, same line of work, a different company,
good co-workers, a bit closer to the customers...
    - Bicycle, still alive and well, a little bit rusty but running great
    - Moved to Shirokane (白金) a quieter, more peaceful neighbourhood in Tokyo then Ebisu (恵比寿) where I was when I last posted.
    - Bought an automobile (A grey 1996 Audi S6 quattro automatic, now with almost 100,000 km on it, 13000 of it mine I figure...)
    - Bought a motorcycle (A blue 1999 BMW R1150R, with only 377 km on it, like new still)
    - Bought another piece of real estate in Nishiogikubo (西荻窪)
    - Built a small home theatre
    - My brother got married
    - My sister got married
    - Went to Bali, Korea, and Guam
    - Skied in Switzerland...or is it "skiied" in Switzerland? Whatever. Not a spelling bee.
    - Working on a Japanese motorboat license
    - Studying German
    - Saw "Prison Break" season 1 & 2
    - Still alive and well!

Enough catching up. I plan to write more about Tokyo life, amd my life as I promised. Let's see.

    - Tokyo Automotive Life
    - Motor commuting in Tokyo
    - Nitty Gritties of vehicle ownership in Tokyo
    - Automotive inspection and imported cars in Japan
    - Motorcycling/Bicycling
    - Parking Madness

    - Living in Tokyo
    - Cost of living/Tokyo how much?
    - Public transportation oddities
    - Places to go in and around Tokyo
    - Tokyo eats/ Japan eats
    - Shopping in Tokyo
    - "Only in Tokyo" incidents

    - My random life events and not-so-life-threatening events

    My Bike
Taken in front of Natural Lawson near my place.

    Bicycle, Bicycle..
I bought a bicycle last Sat... I actually took it to work in 内幸町 this morning from my place in 恵比寿. It is quite pleasant as it takes about 25 minutes to work as opposed to 22 min it takes using the subway... Reducing CO2 emissions and hopefully contribute to the weight loss plan. First time owning a road bike since my Peugeot was given to my brother when I bought my scooter in high school, I had forgotten how efficient and refreshing bicycling was. Will keep you posted.

This is my first post in this blogging space... Since my brother is doing his blogging here and he is broadcasting all the hot hangouts in Kumamoto, I thought I will try to fill in on the Tokyo scene. As I have lived in Japan for much longer in total, I don't find as many things amusing or different, but I may be able to offer a different, more native perspective on what goes on here in the land of the rising sun.
